Restaurant Maya Campestre (formerly Restaurante Familiar La Laguna) is located far enough off the highway (Km 52 - Hwy 186) that the road noise is greatly reduced. The restaurant and nicely layed out grounds are next to a small lake with fish. There are chickens, pigs, and guinea fowl to keep you entertained. In the evening there are mosquitoes and no-see-ums so you must spray. The restaurant lets you camp for free if you eat dinner. Their food was okay but not the best we have had. The beer was 20 pesos. It may be a better idea to just offer to pay for camping overnight and do your own cooking.

Balneario Cocalitos RV, near Bacalar, Quintana Roo is listed in Church's book. It is a cosy place to camp on good grass right beside the lagoon. The lagoon is fresh water high in limestone with a beautiful turquoise colour. It is great for a refreshing swim after a day of driving. There are no hookups, bucket toilets. The rate this year is: 20 pesos/vehicle plus 70 pesos/person.
READERS....A NEW interactive map is up and running. I have much more control over this one and hopefuly it will be more stable than the old one. Check it out. Also, don't forget to leave comments on the shout box located on the home page...

Paa Mul RV Park near Playa del
Carmen is right on the beach. It has a pool, hot showers with bathrooms, full hookups, good restaurant. Its location in the tourist zone relates to the prices they charge. The spots are small and you are close to your neighbors. There is 30 amp service which is quite good at about 127 volts with little drop on A/C. It is quite humid here and while the temperature does not get all that high (30C) it does not cool off at night much either (25C). As with everywhere, there are bugs that bite so one must spray in the evening. The rate at this park is around 400 pesos/night. We did manage to get 4 spots with not many left to choose from. Internet is available but you must pay for it, 500 pesos/month....sorry no daily or weekly rate. I needed it for the web page so I paid. It was because of good access to the web that I finally got a NEW interactive map up and running. Hopefully, it will be more stable than the old one was.

Join us on our trip to Xcaret, Playa del Carmen!
Jan 9/08……Betty's notes
On Jan 5, we arrived at Paa Mul RV park at km 252. We could not find reasonable camping near Tulum for all us so parked here and used this spot as a base. On Jan 6, Ben, Lynette, Bill and Marilyn did a day trip over to Cozumel. Bill and Marilyn shopped while Ben and Lynette visited with friends who have a home there. Larry and I went grocery shopping in Playa del Carmen with John and Sherry. Yup, there was a Walmart and Sam's Club so we were really able to stock up!!! Jan 7, four of us drove back to Tulum to visit the Mayan ruins there. They were constructed in 1008…..about 100 years after Palenque was deserted. They had very little resemblance to Palenque. We were grateful that we hired a guide to better understand the history of Tulum.
(Note…..we did not know this at the time but there may be room to park your rigs at the parking lot at the Tulum Ruins)
Yesterday was one of the best days yet. We are camping at Paa Mul that is 10 km south of Xcaret. Xcaret is a theme park based on its natural surroundings of Mayan Ruins, Mayan history, underground cenotes, underground river ways, wild life, plant life, and ocean life. The entrance fee is $69.00 USD per adult but if you buy your tickets at a ticket booth in Tulum or at one of the other outlets you get 10% discounted. We arrived around 9 a.m. The whole day was spent walking through the natural jungle setting and visiting the various attractions. There were a lot of people there but the property is so large that it did not seem crowded. We went on a peaceful riverboat tour. In the afternoon Bill, Marilyn, Larry and I donned our fins, snorkels and masks and did an underground river snorkeling trip. The river winds in and out caverns. It was a little tight in spots. We swam for 2000 feet! There are areas where we could have exited but we all managed to swim to the end…..it was fantastic!!! We were a little pooped after all that exercise. No worries, we found some hammocks to relax on. After spending the rest of the afternoon seeing as much as we could, we had an early dinner at one of the many restaurants. They had an evening extravaganza production. That alone was worth the price of the ticket. The show went on for over two hours. It was so beautifully put together we were sorry to see it end. We were all very impressed with the entire park. I was amazed that I was able to walk as much as I did. We were tired when we returned to camp after 9 pm but we all said what a wonderful day we had.
