We have had a few visitors. A long time friend of Larry's, Art Jeffrey, from Nanoose Bay, has stopped by a couple times to pick our brains about snowbirding in Mexico. We have had Bill and Marilyn in for a couple lunches. One was a surrogate lunch. Our friends, Fran and Dennis Hunt, from Qualicum Beach were to come for lunch one day while they were on their way to Campbell River to visit his son. The night before their arrival I had prepared home made soup, a couple sandwich fillers and a lovely apple dessert only to receive a call from Dennis saying that Fran was not well. Now what are we going to do with all this food.....no problem....we called and invited Bill and Marilyn over. Fran and Dennis did come for lunch a week later just a few days before they headed south for the winter.
Last weekend (Nov 20-22), we had our first overnight visitors. My grandson, Jackson Harris (12 years old) came over (on his own!) from Delta on the ferry. He was so proud of himself and looked so cool and grown up coming off the ferry. My son, Rob, drove up from Victoria and met us at the Duke Point Ferry terminal. He dropped his two sons, Ryan (12) and Connor (10) off with us. The first thing the boys did when they arrived at our place was head for the crawl space. They had no interest in sleeping in our spare bedroom. The crawl space was "cool". Only 3.5 feet high, it has lights, heat and some carpeting and enough "props" to set up a fort. Saturday morning, after filling up their hollow legs, we took them for a walk into the village. Coming from the metropolitan areas of Vancouver and Victoria the boys were amazed that the one and only main street in Cumberland is a short few blocks....with no traffic light! The old historic post office has been turned into a neat coffee house, the Wandering Moose. We stopped in to treat the boys to a Caramel Steamer for Jackson and a hot chocolate loaded with chocolate whip on top for Ryan and Connor. On the way home we stopped by the Cumberland bakery for treats to share with their lunch visitors. Bill and Marilyn brought their grand daughter, Rayelle (12) over to have lunch with the boys. She brought her friend, Mackenzie (13). It wasn't long before our quiet "old folks home" was transformed into a noisy "tweeney" happening. Rayelle brought a bunch of Wii games. The kids had a blast outwitting each other. After making plans to meet the boys at the aquatic centre after dinner, the girls went home around 3 pm. The boys were so pooped that they went down to the dungeon and had naps before dinner. Staying up past midnight the night before was starting to show its effects. We dropped them off at the aquatic centre at 6:30. They met several of Rayelle and Mackenzie's friends and had fun swimming and playing water games. We visited with Bill and Marilyn at their home in Comox while the boys were swimming. They were sure ready for a quiet evening after a busy day. Sunday, the two older boys slept past 10 a.m.!! We had to wake them up!!! Not Connor. He has always been an early bird. After we got them on the move, we took a drive around Cumberland before heading to meet Bill, Marilyn and Rayelle for a walk along the river. I had told the boys they could have piece of delicious apple pie and ice cream for lunch at the Park Cafe after our walk. But wouldn't you just know it....they had run out of apple pie! The owner told us to pre order next time and she will be sure to bake one special for the boys. We ended up having a regular lunch instead. After saying farewell to the Malletts and Rayelle, we drove out to the Air Museum in Comox before heading back to Duke Point to meet Rob and to put Jackson on the ferry. We were sure two pooped grandparents by the time we got home but cannot wait for them and our other grandchildren to come for more visits. GrandKids: Jackson, Connor, Ryan visit us
